A magnitude 5.3 earthquake strikes near Tokyo, with no apparent connection to a potential megaquake.
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 jolted areas near Tokyo on Friday, as reported by the national weather agency. According to Japanese news agency Kyodo News, the weather agency stated that the earthquake does not appear to be linked to the chance of a massive quake occurring from the Nankai Trough in the Pacific.
The earthquake struck at 19:57 local time and measured a lower five on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of seven in western Kanagawa Prefecture, according to the agency. The focus of the quake was 10 kilometers underground.
This temblor followed the Japan Meteorological Agency's first-ever advisory on higher-than-usual risks of a Nankai Trough megaquake, issued the day before. The advisory came after a magnitude 7.1 quake shook southwestern Japan, with its focus located in waters off Miyazaki Prefecture on the western edge of the Nankai Trough.
