Truck ban timings on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road in Dubai have changed.
The recent announcement of changes to truck movement timings on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road in Dubai marks an important step towards improving traffic flow in the city during peak hours. The decision, made in coordination between the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police General Headquarters, is based on extensive studies that point to the need for such adjustments to alleviate congestion on this key road. The timing adjustment applies to a section of the road extending from Ras Al Khor Road to Sharjah in both directions during peak traffic hours from April 28.
The new schedule restricts truck movement in the morning from 6.30 am to 8.30 am and in two periods in the afternoon, the first from 1 pm to 3 pm and from 5.30 pm to 8 pm. This strategic approach is expected to reduce traffic congestion on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road by up to 15% during these critical periods, benefiting all road users in Dubai.
As part of this initiative, the RTA implements a comprehensive communication plan to inform truck drivers, transport companies, and shipping operators about the new regulations. Informational signs will be installed at the restricted zones to guide heavy vehicle drivers on the designated truck movement times. All stakeholders must comply with these regulations and use alternative routes or designated truck rest areas during restricted hours.
Moreover, the RTA has been actively working on developing truck rest areas along key roads in Dubai in collaboration with the private sector. The construction and enhancement of these rest stops aim to provide adequate facilities for truck drivers to take breaks and ensure road safety. By the time the first phase of this development is completed in August 2024, 15 rest areas will be operational, covering over 300,000 square meters and accommodating around 1,000 trucks and heavy vehicles. The remaining areas are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.
The changes in truck ban timings on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road represent a strategic move by the RTA and Dubai Police to enhance traffic management in the city. This initiative aims to improve road safety and reduce congestion on critical highways by promoting alternate routes and designated rest areas for heavy vehicles. All stakeholders must cooperate and adhere to the new regulations to benefit Dubai’s road users and transport system.
